As a part of the Integrated Educational Pilot Programme,RECDO runs three pre-schools – a Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic one serving the needs of local communities who would otherwise not have access to quality preschool education. Each preschool supports 60–66 children per annum. The main objective of the project is to provide the children (aged 5-6) with a head start before they begin formal primary schooling. Apart from providing a conducive learning environment, the school also focuses on providing adequate nutrition for its children, regular teacher training and skills development (for pre-school teachers of other establishments as well), together with parental guidance workshops.
Typically this initiative serves two groups of beneficiaries: schooling children and public servants. Frequent activities such as exchange visits between single-language/ethnic schools, with educational discussions on topics such as social plurality and inter-faith understanding. Similarly, awareness workshops are conducted among staff within the local police, the Provincial Council and other local state agencies on national language policy and its everyday implementation.
As a component of the Integrated Educational Pilot Programme, this sub-project is concerned more with gap-filling services where slow learners and children with physical disabilities are to be given additional support. Children facing multiple challenges, including those who have been orphaned during wartime and the tsunami were also considered. Six schools were chosen, comprising a cohort of over 200 students annually.
